Using Conventions
A timeline to show everything I have learnt over the AS course:
Research:
I learnt about the different camera shots, angles and movement. From this I learnt how we could apply them to different film and what effects they gave to the audience. For example I learnt that high angles could show the audience as superior over the character, whilst close ups might be used to show emotions of the characters. It was good learning about this as it meant that we could be creative with shots and use a wider variety, rather than just the handful I knew before hand.
I then researched the production, distribution and exhibition meanings. I then applied them to Face Off to show how real media is created and brought to the audience. It was useful as it showed how much work we would have to put into creating a professional product, and what we would have to do to create a product.
I then researched film certification, it's importance and why and how it is decided, as well as the changes throughout time. This taught us about the reasoning for putting a certificate on a film, and showed us that it would have to be thought about depending on our chosen audience.
I then researched other media techniques- Mise-en-scene, the rule of thirds and editing techniques including the 180 degree rule. I learnt the importance of them and why they are used to give the overall effect to the audience. Mise-en-scene taught me the importance of costume, whilst the rule of thirds taught me about how the product is seen.
I then looked at the vertical limit script and from this I learnt that everyone interprets things in different ways, and working in a group would mean we all have a variety of different ideas and effects that we could use in a particular scene meaning our product would have a professional look at the end of it.
Then I researched independent cinema, and how it differs from mainstream. This was useful as I found different ways in which you could distribute short films, and how independent films aren't reliant on money from the big six production companies.
Then I learnt about the conventions of thriller films, which is what our product was going to be. It taught me of all the things that were expected by the audience to be in a thriller, which would have to be included in our opening. Things I found were guns, black vs white, violence, tension and much more. Along with this I researched the characters of the genre, so I knew what types of characters our opening would need to include.
Then I watched thriller film openings, creating timelines to see what they included, writing essays on the conventions used, there effect and how they are applied. This was done so I could learn about what my product was meant to look like and then make a similar creative product.

All the planning was done to make sure our product would be to high standard, and done well...
Creativity:
How was I creative whilst creating my AS product?
Filming Editing Storyboard Narrative Pitch
Kill Bill- The sound of the gun and cut to black out to titles was similar to the product we created.
Se7en- the close ups of the villain crossing out the names of the victims was similar to the close ups used in this product
Bourne Identity- The victim is being ‘followed’ by the villain
Casino Royal- the titles
Thrillers- genre
Technology:
Camera- variety of shots- High shot from train Station Bridge looking down to villain and victim on opposites of station
Train goes past and villain disappears
Tilt- of feet to head- reveal victim
Crossing off list- close up
Layering of shots- list- victim- show he is next
From behind the trees- hidden- followed
Slow motion
Sepia- past
Post Production
Uploaded the footage to the macs- final cut pro-edited the product together- cutting down raw footage using the blade tool. and putting it into a order. Believable narrative
Used audacity- to edit together two tracks together.
Titles- product logo and distribution- professional.
Overlapping- sepia, special effects ken burns- zooms
see the man then train goes past- gone-

Conventions of real media products: Allow you to
establish the genre of the product

documents, shadows, good
vs evil, daylight, close ups, spies

Face Off- 2 male lead characters, not knowing the characters
name, narrative
Kill Bill- guns, close ups
Se7en- close ups of hand writing and crossing things out
Casino Royal- Titles, falling down- from gun shot.
How and why did I use media conventions?
Conventions were used to give a more professional product,
which had purpose and a steer. It also allowed the product to have a more
precise target audience rather than being general.
How successful was using conventions?
By using conventions the audience can recognise the product
of part of the thriller genre. This therefore has been successful as this can
be done.
Have you challenged any conventions?
The characters didn’t look as they should as the protagonist
or antagonist but it is still clear to the reader which character was the bad
guy and which was the good guy due to other conventions used to confirm this.
For example the antagonist wears brown ordinary clothing to blend in rather
than the dark clothing usually associated with the antagonist. However because
of the fact he carries a gun, he was the one who took the files from the dead
girls and he was the one who was following the protagonist the audience see him
as the bad guy.
How has your knowledge of conventions improved?
By knowing the conventions of the genre product
we were going to create it allowed for a more professional product, thus
meaning that my knowledge has improved as I know the importance of conventions.
I also know how conventions can be applied and changed to
