AS Planning

Task 1

This task is our initial ideas. We had a team meeting to discuss two ideas we had in mind.

IDEA 1

this idea would be based around a school. A man would kidnap three students from the school during school hours.

IDEA 2
This idea is based around a train station. A innocent man would be murdered by another male character at the station in daylight.

Task 2
This task is our questionnaire. We asked 50 people what their opinions of our film ideas.

Questionnaire

1)      Who are thrillers more suited for?

Males
Females

2)      Which certificate is more suitable for thrillers?

PG
12
12a
15
18

3)      Would you prefer a male or female lead character?

Male
Female

4)      Which idea do you prefer?

Idea 1: Lead character breaks into a school, taking three students hostage.

Idea 2: Lead character’s job is to track down the men who killed his wife and avenge her death.

5)      Based on the previous question, which name do you prefer for the chosen idea?

Idea 1:
·         Hostage
·         Break In
Idea 2:
·         Tracker
·         No One is Innocent

Task 3
This task is our questionnaire results and tables.

RESULTS:
1) Male = 32 Female = 18
2) pg = 0 12 = 0 12a = 0 15= 40 18= 10
3) Male =38 Female = 12
4) idea 1 = 23 idea 2 = 27
5) hostage = 16 break in = 7      tracker = 19 no one is innocent = 8

Conclusion from the questionnaire

According to the results of our questionnaire our target audience are young adults from the age of 15 and upwards, this is because 40/50 people voted for this age certificate. For our opening thriller this would be ideal since the group is aged between 16-17 and will have a clear idea to what the audience would be interested in.

The gender we are mainly aiming at are the males, this is because thrillers are commonly made for males for example the Dark Knight Rises is aimed at the male audience. This may be an issue for us because we haven’t got a male in the group so we may have to ask our target audience to what they like in thrillers and carry out more research in order to make a successful thriller.

From our result the most popular idea is idea 1, which is about a victim going to catch the train to go work but is being carefully watched by the villain who is going to shoot him. The audience like this idea more because they thought it was more interesting and that it fits to the thriller conventions and genre.

The name which was voted highest from our most popular idea was 'TRACKER' with 19 out of the 27 votes who believed this idea was better. We believe this title to be a unique name for our film, as it provides a pun. With the idea that our opening is set at 'the tracks' and if the film was completed there would be a 'tracker'.

The questionnaire showed that a male lead character would be more popular with 38/50 people voting for this. As our target audience is male teens we believe this is a good result as they will be more interested in the film.

Task 4
This task is our location survey.

Results from 50 people aged between 15-30 years old.

 Task 6

This task is our pitch and presentation.

 Pitch-

Megan:What would happen if you were in a villain’s mind? What would happen if there was no escape? Our film is about a man who was victimized  His family was murdered and he was forced to become a hit man for the people who did it. He has killed hundreds of innocent people but now he’s had enough. Now, he has sworn revenge on the people who turned him into a murderer. He’s tracking them down, and taking revenge. This man is Theo Wallcott, and he is the Tracker.

Rebekah: Our story line is based around two men. Theo is our villain who is getting dressed. He puts a suit jacket on, and walks to a train station. Note the scars on his face, as he blends in to society.
At the train station, we see another man, Jasper, who plays the protagonist. He is also clad in a business suit. He is also approaching the platform, but on the other side.
Both men notice each other, and Jasper begins to panic at the sight of Theo, and looks for ways to escape. Knowing there isn't a way out, his panic grows. A train whizzes past, and Theo is gone. We cut back to Jasper, and Theo moves from behind him and in view of the camera. He is holding a gun, and we hear a gunshot. Cut to movie name, “TRACKER”.

Amy:     There will be no dialogue in the opening, it will be mostly action. The narrative of the opening sets up questions which the audience will want to know the answers to. Who is Theo? Why is he killing Jasper? Who will he kill next? It gives the audience high expectations for the rest of the film which we will hope to meet.
Our film will be a thriller, so naturally its aim is to ‘thrill’ the audience. We will be doing this by incorporating common genre conventions into our opening. The conventions are as followed:

Sara:      WEAPONRY:
A common prop used is a gun which will make the audience feel a sense of danger. The villain Theo is going to use a gun which will make the audience feel worried and anxious for Jasper’s life since he is seen as innocent

Rebekah:  BLACK AND WHITE:
Both of our characters will be dressed in black and white, which contrasts and connotates good verses bad, or evil verses purity. The colours are nearly always used in thriller films to create dramatic effect.

Amy:     LOCATION:
The location will be Codsall Train Station, as it is a great place to show that our characters travel a lot, as they usually do in thriller films. The audience assume that Jasper is going to work due to his office attire, as it shows his neat and hardworking personality. This allows the audience to feel a personal connection with him.

Sara: Sound is a very important convention in thriller openings as the different music themes produce a different mood and feel for the films. For example fast paced music could be played when the gun is revealed to create a tense and exciting atmosphere. Other sound elements which are used to give the films their thrilling genre are: diegetic/ non-diegetic sounds, sound effects, like trains driving by, or the sound of people talking in the background.

Megan:TIME:
A clock will be shown at the train station to build panic and tension within the audience. Clocks are often used to show time running out, and make the audience wonder what’s going to happen when it does.

Sara:  FLASHBACKS AND PHOTOGRAPHS:
Flashbacks will make the audience feel disoriented and confused as they try to work out the plot. In our opening a flashback of Theo looking at a photograph could be shown which is a code for a thriller and can be an important recurring theme. The photo will be of Jasper which will give the audience an idea of what his motive might be and the links to the theme of identity.

We are hoping that by using these conventions with the appropriate cinematography, we will create a thrilling opening which the audience will enjoy.

Megan: Our thriller will be rated a 15. The opening does not use any gory or psychological scenes causing it to be rated higher than a 15, but it is too violent for an audience younger than fifteen. Taking these factors and our questionnaire data into account, we decided that having a certificate of 15 would be the best option.

Amy:     Almost all information is found on the internet nowadays, so we took that into consideration and decided that the marketing of our film will include posting the opening onto free online video websites, such as YouTube. It will also be featured on each of our blogs. This will help create ‘internet buzz’ which will help us attract potential viewers.

Rebekah:  The information above has been concluded with questionnaires and surveys which we   handed out to people of your age and gender, our target audience. If you do have any queries about the opening or improvements for us, we would be happy to take them on board.

                Thank you for listening.

Task 7
This task is our second team meeting, discussing the feedback of our pitch.

We discussed the issue of location which was seen as an issue by our target audience. However we came to the conclusion it wouldn't be a huge issue because it is easily accessible and won't be busy a perfect location for a shooting. We were happy that our target audience would watch our film and enjoyed the idea.

Outline
Theo, whom the audience will assume is the villain, is going out to kill Jasper. Jasper seems to be an ordinary innocent man to the audience. The opening will finish with a gunshot cutting to the main title of the film TRACKER.

Post Production

After filming we will need to edit together all our clips so that it matches our storyboard to the best it can. We will also need to add non digetic sounds like backing music and may have to increase the impact of some sounds heard in the film, for example the footsteps of Theo on the ground.

Target Audience

Target Audience is male teenage boys, this is based from the knowledge thrillers like the dark knight, face off and Kill Bill are aimed at boys between the ages of 18-30. We have chosen teenage boys because from the results of our questionnaire we can clearly see the certificate rating was a 15 and the preferred audience was men allowing us to create a male audience of this age.
Synopsis
Theo is out for revenge to find and kill the people who murdered his family, and therefore he is the protagonist in the whole film. He is out to kill all of the men in the CTF assassination squad whom killed his family in a home explosion, creating scars on his face making him appear to be the villain in the beginning. If the whole film was created it would be based on this idea, Theo working alone to fight for peace, and revenge.

What elements of your research have you drawn upon to influence your final decision on the synopsis?
We have used our thriller research and used codes and conventions from the thrillers. For example- The use of black and white in the clothes the characters will be wearing, connotating the stereotypes of ‘good VS evil’. We used thriller iconography, for example: the use of weapons which, in this case, is a gun also links to the theme of violence. We used the production company sheet (TASK 18) to research into production logos, influencing our own company logo and name ‘MARS Productions.’ We completed research on Thriller films by other companies, looking for potential storylines, stock characters, iconography and cinematography to use.

Task 15
This task is our character development profile.

Theo
Theo (played by ) is our villain in our thriller film Tracker. He used to live a normal life in London working as a business man, but after his family were killed he swore his revenge. The murders killed his mom, dad, brother, wife and their unborn child in an explosion of his family home when he was aged 22. Theo has scars over his face because of the explosion, as he was outside when it happened. He has a pretty good idea of who has destroyed his life: the deadly CTF Assassination Squad.
Theo shoots protagonist Jasper in the back, but he doesn’t have any conflict or fight scene with him, as Jasper literally does not see it coming.  Theo is highly trained by a different organisation ever since the explosion, so he has been with them for 3 years.
Theo has only one goal: to kill those who killed his family.
Theo is an intelligent, hard-working man aged around 25. He is slightly depressed, and has no conscience as he feels he lost his ‘life’ when his family were killed.  He is neat, organised, stubborn, manipulative, uncaring and powerful.
This character is going to be dressed smartly in a black and white suit. He has scars across one half of his face, and his hair is short and black. He has pale skin which emphasizes the disability more,  and his eyes appear sunken and cheekbones too prominent.

Jasper
Jasper (played by???) is our protagonist in our thriller film Tracker. He used to be a part of the CTF Assassination Squad, but left the organisation to do a more ‘civilised’ job, and to start a family with his wife. Although he has not been a part of the CTF for 2 years, he is still haunted by the past mistakes that he has made.
Jasper helped other members of the CTF to find Theo’s home, and quit the organisation when he realised they were killing innocent people. Jasper does not know that Theo is actually trained by another organisation, and has been with them for 3 years. Jasper himself was with the CTF from ages 16 to 22 (six years), when he quit. If he’d of suspected that Theo was behind him, he probably would have put up a fight!
Jasper is the victim, so he doesn’t have a goal, but he does desire to be left alone.
Jasper is a courageous, helpful, dedicated man aged 24. He loves him family dearly, and this is his weakness in the story. He is patient, understanding and determined.
This character is going to be dressed appropriately for work in a black and white suit, and holding a briefcase.

Task 16
This task is the problems we can encounter.

Problem list can be found here!

Task 17
This task is the codes and conventions we used in our thriller opening.

WEAPONARY:
Guns are used in thriller openings to engage and excite the audience. They are used by both the villain and protagonists in thrillers, but in our opening just Theo (the villain) will be using one. This is to make the audience see Jasper as innocent and worry for his safety.

BLACK AND WHITE:
Both of our characters will be dressed in black and white, which contrasts and connotates good verses bad, or evil verses purity. The colours are nearly always used in thriller films to create dramatic effect.

LOCATION:
The location will be Codsall Train Station, as it is a great place to show that our characters travel a lot, as they usually do in thriller films. The audience assume that Jasper is going to work due to his office attire, as it shows his neat and hardworking personality. This allows the audience to feel a personal connection with him.

TIME:
A clock will be shown at the train station to build panic and tension within the audience. Clocks are often used to show time running out, and make the audience wonder what’s going to happen when it does.

FLASHBACKS AND PHOTOGRAPHS:
Our villain Theo will look at a picture of Jasper which will give the audience an idea of what his motive might be, therefore engaging them further into the storyline.

Task 18
This task is our independent production logo research.

This is the logo I designed for MARS PRODUCTIONS our production company. It came about by our four names put together: MEGAN, AMY, REBEKAH AND SARA. Forming MARS PRODUCTIONS. After a little research into the planet mars we found that it was the first planet to be seen via a telescope influencing our design.
